Jane Mowat. Workshops.
Woodcarving and Printmaking Workshops - for beginners and artists alike.
DATES: These are by arrangement, depending when I am available. We can do a regular run of dates (monthly/every 2 weeks/whole or half days or weekends), or a one-off for a particular project or a taster event.
I hold workshops in my studio in Somerset. These are for regular students, and also for the one off experience, either a day, half day or a weekend. These can be tailor-made to fit, so do contact me so that we can negotiate dates and numbers. I don’t normally have more that 4 people at a time because of space. The doors are kept open to enjoy the views in the warmer months. There’s a cosy wood burner for the colder ones!
Refreshments are always offered, and normally students bring their own lunch, and dress appropriately for the weather. Don’t wear your best if printing!
Advice and guidance is given individually: you might have lots of ideas, skills and confidence, and are happy to explore your creativity, or you might just be starting out nervously; I can help you find your way with a piece of wood!
Cutting and carving is done using long-handled gouges and wooden mallets and most printing is done by hand, as the natural woods I use have uneven surfaces and shapes, and individual care is needed for each block. I print on fine Nepalese or Japanese papers, using high-quality oil-based inks.
I have been printing in this way for over 25 years and am happy to share my experiences and knowledge with those who come.
I normally arrange workshops by arrangement. These can be half day (morning or afternoon) or for the whole day. If you wish to do a whole weekend this is possible too! Please contact me so that we can agree on dates!
COST: £85 per person per day, and £45 for half day, which includes most materials and refreshments to keep you going. If you can book along with a friend or family member, all the better, but I am happy to work on a one to one basis.
Please contact me for more information and see the pages on woodcarving and prints to get an idea of what I do.

"Jane has been inspirational! I'd never tried carving or printing before starting the workshops. Jane gave
me the confidence and space to be able to develop my own style in a supportive and reassuring place. Her
knowledge and teaching style is fantastic, and Jane has enabled me to take my creativity further trying
different combinations of print media."

"Working at your own pace, Jane gently guides you to achieve your own individual piece of work.
I came for a day, I stayed four years!
Words that come into my mind on a days workshop with Jane Mowat -
Gentle, sharing, learning, laughter, connection, creativity and best of all... cake!"
