Jane Mowat. Prints.
Woodcuts.
I have used natural woods since I started making woodcuts. The uneven edge of the block, its idiosyncrasies of grain, awkward knots and surface give me something to work with. What image will appear, inspired by this palette of marks and shapes? What figures, sounds and suggested stories?
Mostly the figures that emerge are imagined, and some are archetypes, such as Adam. The planks he came from, along with Eve (not illustrated) were heavily marked by wear and tear, suitable, I thought, for an old ancestor.
‘Rescue’ came from the swirl of the elm grain within the block, suggesting water.
'Figure Sleeping under the Mountain’ came about as the top of the plank was so weathered, it seemed, as a mountain would be, and ‘Resting under a Mountain’ had such sparse grain above that again, a mountain could rise into the sky, while the tighter grain below allowed me to make the resting figure compact.
‘Chattering Birds’ and ‘Singing Birds’ were made in the winter of 2021 when I longed for birdsong during our lockdown winter, allowing me to look forward to spring.
All these prints are available to buy, although as they are printed in small batches, sometimes there is a waiting time of a couple of weeks. Measurements are given for suggested mounts or frames, allowing 5cm extra each side of the actual printed block for smaller prints, and 10cm on each side of larger prints. They all need to be framed under glass due to the delicacy of the Japanese fine papers I use. The printing inks are high quality and light-fast.
If you are interested in any of the prints, please contact me. They are only available in small editions. They will be sent carefully rolled in a tube, not mounted or framed except for the smaller prints which can be mounted (but not framed or glazed). Postage is not included in the prices given.
